Squatter currently being held in prison

A vagabond gold prospector is currently being held in the Fairbanks Correctional Facility for allegedly burning down a cabin in the Healy area.

23-year-old Californian Andrew Costales has been squatting in remote cabins for the past two winters.

Troopers received reports from officials of the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority last week, which eventually led to Costales’ arrest a few days ago.

Troopers say that Costales started a fire in the cabin’s wood stove and then left the building.

When he came back, the cabin was burned down.
