City firefighters, city agree to terms

City firefighters and the city of Fairbanks are close to a new contract after a year of negotiations at the table.

Unlike finalized contracts with city police and public employees that expire in 2014, the proposed new contract with city firefighters will be a three year contract, ending in 2015.

Fairbanks Firefighters Association officials are satisfied that both sides agreed to a salary increase of just slightly more than one-and-a-half percent.

The City Council must first ratify the tentative agreement in place.

Once terms are approved by the council, Local 1342 will hold an up-or-down vote with its members over a span of three days.

Union representatives say the negotiation process may have seemed long, but are happy terms could be worked out through mediation instead of arbitration.
