Anchorage Police: Body found is not Koenig

ANCHORAGE, AK - Anchorage police say the body found near a lake north of Anchorage is not missing barista Samantha Koenig. Police department spokesman Dave Parker says the body is male.

The human remains were found late Tuesday evening, leading to speculation that it was the 18-year-old woman now missing for about seven weeks. A person walking on snow shoes discovered the body near the road leading to Eklutna Lake. The remains were taken to the medical examiner for autopsy.

The Koenig case has galvanized residents of Alaska's largest city since police say she was kidnapped Feb. 1 from the coffee stand where she worked. Authorities made an arrest earlier this month in the case. The man arrested in Texas is suspected of using Koenig's credit card or bank card to access money.
