Murkowski proposes disclosure bill

WASHINGTON, DC -- Sen. Lisa Murkowski today introduced the Fairness in Disclosure of Evidence Act, designed to protect defendants in federal courtrooms nationwide.

The bill was introduced the same day as the release of U.S. District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan's report into misconduct by prosecutors in the 2008 trial of Senator Ted Stevens.

Senator Murkowski said the bill wasn't introduced to vindicate Stevens, but to insure that the criminal justice system works the way the Constitution meant it to.

The bill requires federal prosecutors to make early disclosure of evidence that demonstrates the possible innocence of a defendant.
