The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner ( http://bit.ly/xoP1Qc) says the advance team in the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division is returning to the Fairbanks area base after a year in Afghanistan. The return marks the first large-scale homecoming flight since the unit left Fort Wainwright in April 2011.
The advance team will help prepare the way for the return of the 4,000-member unit.
Flights of the brigade's main body are likely to begin arriving at Eielson Air Force Base in the next few weeks. About two dozen brigade soldiers have died during the Afghanistan deployment.
