The Fairbanks North Star Borough is still not accepting applications for their wood stove replacement, removal or repairs programs, a week after the State of Alaska gave the Borough the go ahead to continue.
Funding for the program comes from the State Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development.
The Borough halted the program soon after Proposition 3 passed in the Municipal election.
Prop 3 prohibits the Borough from regulating solid fuel burning devices within Borough boundaries.
The Borough is concerned the programs will not have the intended effect of reducing air pollution if they have no real way of ensuring stove owners will use the stoves over other non–certified stoves.
They also believe there is potential for fraud.
