Winds keep firefighters, electric crews busy

A fire damaged the building that housed the Jackovich Tractor Saw Shop at 1600 Well Street this afternoon.
The building was not open or occupied at the time of the fire.
The blaze was brought under control in about 30 minutes.
The fire originated outside the building near some storage, and the cause is still under investigation.
During this fire numerous other fires were going on throughout the Fairbanks Area.
Small brush fires quickly became large fires due to the high winds and dry conditions.
Also numerous trees were knocked over onto power lines. causing power outages.

Winds gusting to 50 miles an hour caused extreme conditions on the 100 Mile Creek fire near Delta Junction.
The winds were preventing firefighter efforts on the ground.
Retardant tankers were used to protect military assets in the area. There was no threat to communities.
Red Flag Warnings for strong southerly winds have been posted for the north side of the Alaska Range.
