West Valley splits pivotal baseball double header with Lathrop

FAIRBANKS,AK-The Lathrop Malemutes and West Valley Wolfpack both came in to tonight's double header with a conference loss and either team just needed to sweep in order to win the Mid Alaska Conference title outright and lock a state berth.

Lathrop took game one by coming out strong and maintaing their lead. Terrel Ford hit a double in the bottom of the fourth that brought in two runners and gave Lathrop a 4-3 lead. In the next inning Jose Sanchez hits a double that clears the bases and give Lathrop a 7-3 lead. The Malemutes would hold on for a 7-5 win in game one.

Matt Van Muelken pitched a complete game was credited the win.

Lathrop had the momentum and switched from Marlin field to Arco for their last home game of the regular season.

Game two look as if Lathrop would continue from where they left in game one when Lathrop's  Van Muelken struck an rbi single that brought home Wyatt Berg.  A wild pitch by West Valley's Tyler Christmann in the top of second scored another run for Lathrop giving them a 2-0 lead into the top of the third.

West Valley didn't get too flustered and hung around. Lathrop strung together some runs and a 5-3 in the top of the seventh inning. Then the Wolfpack went crazy with hits.

First baseman Trent Chiu hit an rbi single that got West Valley on the scoreboard. That big hit was followed by KC Lewandoski's triple that cleared the bases. That was a part of a six run inning to propel West Valley into their first lead of the game. It was 9-5 West Valley. Christmann was all of sudden confident on the mound and closed it out. West Valley spoils Lathrop's senior night with a 9-5 comeback win.

North Pole won big tonight with a 15-4 victory over Lathrop which brings us to the MAC scenario.

The top two seeds who will get ASAA baseball state berths will come down to run differential.

Lathrop has no more regular season games but has clinched a state berth as the two seed. Tomorrow's game between North Pole and West Valley will determine who gets the one seed.

West Valley beat Lathrop 9-5 and the Wolfpack face North Pole at noon at Marlin Field in the last MAC game.

North Pole has to beat West Valley by four or more runs to get a trip to state. A win by that four run margin will give them the MAC number one seed. However, if North Pole wins by three runs or less or loses they are out.

West Valley has to win regardless of score for a state tournament bid. If West Valley wins they will be the one seed and Lathrop will go as the two seed.
