FAIRBANKS-It was senior night for the West Valley Wolfpack last night and they took on the Eielson Ravens. Wolfpack head coach David Cox did something a little different. He allowed his six seniors to play the entire game. They had to dig deep.
West Valley was already up two nil in sets and were looking for the sweep but the Ravens wouldn't go quietly and led 24-23 in the third.
But the Wolfpack seniors came back behind the excellent serving of Lauren Slater. Slater had a double double posting a team high 12 and 10 aces including the game winner for the sweep.
"I was just looking for their weak passers and just hitting them high and deep and it paid off," Slater said.
It was a 25-2, 25-13, 26-24 win for West Valley.
"It's amazing. It feels awesome," senior and captain Samantha Crawford said. "It's a really big deal for us. This is our last year, our last home game technically you know, it's like a rush of emotions and excitement so it's awesome."
Seniors Tori Howdeshell had 19 assists, Deenaalee Hodgden had 10 digs and Crawford chipped in sx kills, two blocks and two aces for West Valley.
Hodgen talked about the defense being consistent how years of chemistry aided in the victory.
"Definitely in the third set we needed that and I think we were able to communicate finally but in that first and second set we did pretty well," Hodgden said. "We knew where we had to be on the court and this is also our sixth year playing together. So I think that really helped us get the win tonight."
The Ravens fall to 3-8 and West Valleys improves to 7-2 overall after the nonconference win.
