West Valley and Lathrop going to March Madness

FAIRBANKS, Ak-Tonight on Coach T Court at Lathrop High School the West Valley girls and Lathrop boys punched their tickets to the state tournament with wins over their rivals.

The West Valley girls won 53-45 over the Malemutes. The Wolfpack got huge lifts in both halves with senior Caitlyn Brice hitting 12 of her team high 17 points in the first half. The Wolfpack had a 28-18 lead at halftime.

The Malemutes would not go quietly with Jasmine White hitting nine of her game high 18 points in the fourth quarter but she was countered by West Valley's Lawjen Ashmore. Ashmore, a senior, dropped 10 of her 14 points in the last quarter to hold off Lathrop and secure the MAC title.

In the boys game the duo of Kyle Carlson and Tremon Washington of Lathrop overwhelmed West Valley in the second half on their to a 57-42 MAC championship victory.

It was a tight first half with both teams tied at 29 at the break. In the third quarter Lathrop put on the clamps and held the Wolfpack to just four points in the quarter and outscored West Valley 28-13 in the second half.

Carlson hit a trio of three pointers and Washington was steady throughout with his scoring. Gabriel Cunningham added 10 points going six for nine at the chariy stripe.

Jason Gordon had 14 to lead West Valley. Daniel Hornbuckle added 12.

The state championship starts March 16-23. The 4A and 3A tournaments start on the 21st in Anchorage.
