CINCINNATI-It turns out that winning hockey championships is contagious in the 49th state. The Fairbanks Ice Dogs won the Robertson Cup this season at the Big Dipper and now the state team to the South won a Cup last night.
The Alaska Aces won the ECHL Kelly Cup last night in a 4-0 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on the road ending the Kelly Cup Finals in six games.
It's the third championship for the Alaska Aces franchise. There last Kelly Cup was in 2011 the same season the Ice Dogs won the Robbie Cup.
Gerald Coleman had a 23 save shutout performance and captain Nick Mazzolini had a goal and an assist.
UAF product Andy Taranto hoisted the Kelly Cup. He appeared in six playoff games this season and 21 career points in 41 games after two seasons of pro hockey.
The Aces join the Hampton Roads Admirals and South Carolina Stingrays as the only teams to have at least three titles.
The ECHL title ends a great year for the Anchorage team who also won the Brabham Cup for the regular season title. They've won the last four Brabhams.
