FAIRBANKS-This week the GNAC preseason polls for basketball were released and the Nanooks were picked to finish fifth in the conference. Alaska went 16-12 and 10-8 in conference finishing fourth. They went 2-16 in the GNAC in 2011-2012. A great turnaround for last year's co-coach of the year Mick Durham.
The Nanooks bring in six new players to go along with seven returners two of which were starters last year.
Sergej Pucar, a senior center from Serbia returns and today was picked as a unanimous selection to the GNAC Preseason All-Conference team. The 6'11 Serb was second team all GNAC last year averaging 10.8 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game. Senior Forward Ronnie Baker, who was top 10 in the GNAC in steals, brings back his 8.9 points per game.
Seattle Pacific was picked to win the conference and the Falcons' David Downs is the preseason player of the year. UAA was selected second, then Western Washington and Central Washington for the top four teams.
The Nanooks start their year with two exhibitions in the Patty Center on Nov 8 and 9 against Northwest Indian College.
