LACEY, WA-Today the UAF men's basketball team returns to the GNAC tournament semis for the second straight year after their 69-59 win over MSUB.
Austin Hudson led four Yellowjackets in double figures with 14 points as MSUB rallied from a 12 point deficit tied it at 49 with eight minutes left.
But the Nanooks answered with a Mike Stepovich three ball and then the Joe Slocum show. Slocum scored a game high 15 points-10 in the second half including six points in the final five minutes.
UAF outscores MSUB 20-10 in final 6:13 of the game for the win. Slocum talks about his performance and head coach Mick Durham talks about facing Western Washington Vikings in the semis tomorrow-a GNAC tournament rematch from last year.
"I wanted to be very aggressive. You know getting my teammates involved and getting into the lane-either, whatever's open a shot or a pass out I just wanted to be aggressive. Kind of as a point guard I wanted to set the tone for the team and I felt I was able to do that," Slocum said.
The Nanooks and Vikings split this year. UAF won 65-61 at home in the first meeting then Western Washington barely won 53-51 over the Nanooks on their own floor. Durham believes his team is going to need scoring in order to get to the GNAC Championship game.
"Yeah we got to have a good, whatever, 30 hours here getting ready and see what we can do against Western. We played them very tough both games defensively. At some point we have to make shots and that's going to be critical tomorrow night is us knocking down some shots," Durham said.
