UAF Hockey loses to Michigan State

FAIRBANKS, Ak-The Nanooks weres hosts to the Michigan State Spartans tonight in the Carlson Center. The Nanooks welcomed the CCHA basement team but they looked anything but a last place team.

Greg Wolfe scored what would be the game winner at the 7:53 mark in the first period. Wolfe, the Spartans' captain, went back door on the right side and scooted the puck right under John Keeney's skate for the goal. Keeney played well after that flub making 13 of 14 saves for the Nanooks.

It was a defensive struggle but the Nanooks had plenty of opportunities and chances to score. Some chances were point blank, others a little quirky, and some were just nullified due to the packed in defense, short windows and hot play of Michigan State's defense and goalie Will Yanakeff. Yanekeff stopped all 37 Nanook shots for the 1-0 shutout victory.

Even with the 37-14 shooting advantage, three power plays, and a 6 on 4 advantage in the last minute the puck never found the back of the net for UAF.

Now the Nanooks have one more chance to end their CCHA legacy on a positive note as the teams take the ice tommorow at 7:05 pm in the Carlson Center. This is the last CCHA series for UAF who will be moving to the WCHA conference next season.
