UAF hockey gets first WCHA sweep with two blowouts

FAIRBANKS-The Nanook hockey team kicked off Hockey Week in Fairbanks with their first ever WCHA sweep. UAF won 6-1 on Friday over the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers and followed up with an identical 6-1 victory on Saturday night at the Carlson Center.

UAF scored about halfway through the first period after freshman Jared Linnel found junior Nolan Yungmun for one-timer to the scoring started.

It looked it would be game as that was the only score in the first period. But 21 seconds into the second period Parayko's shot from the point was redirected by senior Cody Kunyk to give Alaska a 2-0 lead.

Alaska (12-12-4, 9-11-4 WCHA) then converted on special teams with a power play goal by Jared Larson at the 8:29 mark. Larson finished with two goals. His first two goal game as a Nanook.

Its' 3-0 Nanooks but the Chargers (1-26-1, 1-16-1 WCHA) answered four minutes later with a goal of their own with Brent Fletcher goal.

But the Nooks had scored three goals in the third period much like they did in Friday night's game.

The Nanooks got 49 shots on goal for a season high in that category. Junior goalie Sean Cahill only saw 14 shots and stopped 13 of them. In the series the Nanooks out shot the Chargers 92-28.

Seven UAF plays had multi-point games which is the best output this year. Kunyk finished with two goals and an assist to lead Alaska.

The Nanooks will get some rest and reflect on their sweep for a bit as they go into their bye week.
