FAIRBANKS- The University of Alaska Fairbanks is pushing to upgrade their heat and power plant because it’s nearing the end of its 50-year lifespan. Last month, they asked the state legislature to invest in the project, and today they held an open house for contractors. Organizers wanted to show the current condition of the plant, specifically the coal burners they want to upgrade. They estimate a full upgrade will cost $245 million, but say a potential malfunction could cost much more. The University aims to have upgrades completed by winter 2018.
