Troopers release identity of victim in North Pole fatal car accident

NORTH POLE- One person is dead and another has been sent to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital with serious injuries after a head on motor vehicle collision this morning on the Old Richardson Highway.

According to first responders, two full-size vehicles were involved in the accident.

59-year-old Ernest Ford of North Pole has been tentatively identified as the motorist that died in the accident after Troopers say a Ford F-350, driven by 37-year-old Eddie Ahyakak of Fairbanks, crossed the center line, striking Ford's vehicle head on.

That vehicle became fully engulfed in flames immediately after impact, and Ahyakak's caught fire as well.

The accident occurred right next to Holland Aviation Avenue; the Richardson Highway was shut down to traffic near 12-mile to all motorists while authorities were investigating the cause of the fatal collision.

Ahyakak was able to walk to the ambulance from his large truck, but was taken to the hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.

Next of kin have been identified and notified of the incident.

First responders said an investigation into the accident is ongoing.
