CENTRAL, AK -- Trappers have shot and killed a big grizzly bear that was coming out of its den near their trapline in the Crazy Mountains north of the mining community of Central.
Jack Hendrickson and Jimmy Gelvin saw bear tracks Dec. 11 but only had their .22-caliber pistols used on live marten or wolverines caught in traps.
The men returned the next day with Hendrickson's son, another man and high-powered rifles to look for the bear's den. They found the den and shot the bear three times as it came out. Hendrickson says they killed the bear because they didn't want to be ambushed while traveling their trapline.
The area is open for grizzly Sept. 1 through May 31 so the trappers were able to salvage the meat and hide.
