TCC Starts Annual Board Meeting

FAIRBANKS- Tribal members representing 42 communities from across Interior Alaska convened in Fairbanks today for the Tanana Chiefs Conference's 2014 Annual Delegate and Full Board of Director's Meeting. Unlike previous meetings, Elders and Youth delegates spoke first.  Many talked about health issues in their communities and creating support strategies.

Support is a major theme of this year’s conference and the mantra is, “The Time is Now.”  That slogan was inspired by a report,  that took a close look at the public safety issues in Alaska, specifically the lack of public safety in many rural Alaskan communities. TCC President, Jerry Isaac says Tribal Councils can add much needed support to those areas if they could be recognized with authority to act before law enforcement.

On another note, electing a new president for the Tanana Chiefs Conference is a main item on the agenda for the board of directors. Jerry Isaac has fulfilled term limit and the new president will elected and be sworn in Thursday. Isaac says tribes have always chosen their leader and he's honored the tribes chose him to serve for eight years.
