(FAIRBANKS) Tribal members representing 42 communities from across Interior Alaska will convene in Fairbanks Monday for the Tanana Chiefs Conference’s 2014 Annual Delegate and Full Board of Director’s Meeting.
Those attending will include youth representatives, state and federal officials, health providers, various organization representatives, and the general public.
The theme of the event, which runs through Thursday, is "The time is now."
That theme was inspired by a report released in November 2013 by the Indian Law and Order Commission which was titled ‘Reforming Justice for Alaska Natives: The Time is Now’.
The report took a close look at the public safety issues in Alaska, specifically the lack of public safety in many rural Alaskan communities.
TCC President, Jerry Isaac said during the week, they will hear discussion and concerns from Tribal members about the subject.
Keynote Speaker Troy Eid of Denver, Colorado, is the Chairman of the Indian Law and Order Commission, the national advisory commission to President Obama and Congress on strengthening justice throughout Indian Country and Alaska Native communities.
