The State of Alaska is looking for public comment on a proposal to arm Village Public Safety Officers.
The VPSO program is funded by the state and managed by State Troopers. Officers act as first responders in villages where Troopers aren't able to immediately respond.
Currently, officers are required to submit written notice when carrying a gun on duty. The proposed changes would get rid of that requirement and authorize all officers to carry handguns.
The new regulations would also allow grant funds to be used for purchasing firearms.
Public comment will be accepted from now until 4:30 pm on January 17th.
You can find the link to the proposed changes and public comment section at the link below.
