Crews with the Alaska Department of Transportation Northern Region have begun the task of cleaning up the roadway from the series of Avalanches that occurred near Valdez.
The length of the highway closed has decreased but the danger is still there and motorists are urged to stay away from the road blocks.
According to Alaska Department of Transportation Northern Region Spokeswoman Hannah Blankenship, “crews were able to mobilize last evening and were able to start snow removal operations on Friday morning.”
The avalanche dammed the Lower River and created issues for equipment to access fallen snow; after removal D-O-T will conduct stability tests on the road.
Blankenship says they should have a timeline for the time the highway will open this weekend.
