Seniors take to the links this weekend for FGA Titles

FAIRBANKS, AK-Friday morning is day one of the 26th Annual Fairbanks Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship. Our very own Mike Shultz won a couple of these.

The senior golf major if you will, for golfers at least 50 years young starts at the Fairbanks Golf Course tomorrow. On Saturday it will be at the North Star Golf Club and on Sunday the Chena Bend Gold Course will host. Tee times start at 8 a.m. and run through the afternoon. Morning tee times be on Saturday and Sunday as well.

Today Lee Williams, co-chair of the tournament committee and FGA board member talked to me about this weekend's event and how it's organized for the senior athletes.

"We do a system called flighting where we put people of different handicaps abilities together. Basically competing against each other. The championship flight is comprised this year of seven or eight guys that are really at the top of the game, you know. Guys that can shoot even par and post some nice scores," Williams said.

Williams said the reall challenge is the location of the senior championship. It changes day to day.

"Having it at all three courses in town definitely makes them have to test their game at three completely different facilities. A full round-up of Fairbanks."
