Senator questions report on Native Corporations

WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Mark Begich is questioning a report on the governance and financial reporting requirements of Regional Alaska Native Corporations.

The report was originally requested by Representative Ed Markey of Massachusetts.

Markey said he intends to propose legislation that would allow the federal government to dictate Alaska Native Corporations reporting requirements to shareholders.

Begich said the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act has allowed for each regional corporation to establish reporting and governance requirements for their shareholders that work best for its people.

Begich said "I think there's always and continues to be a total misunderstanding of how our native corporations are set up, who they benefit, and their purpose and goals."
