FAIRBANKS, Ak. - Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski (R) is criticizing a bill that would require states to collect sales taxes from online business and retailers, even if the business is not physically present in the state.
Senate Bill 743, also known as the "Marketplace Fairness Act," seeks to change current law, mandating state governments collect sales taxes from businesses across the country.
Murkowski says there is nothing "fair" about a law that subjects businesses to tax laws of other states.
The senator says the proposed law is nothing more than a directive from the Federal government of "uniform application," noting the bill is against the rights of states that have chosen not to have a statewide sales tax.
