School Board votes to instate Parent/Staff Committee in principal hiring

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District School Board voted last evening to approve a parent staff committee in the hiring of a new Principal.

The issue came after the Parent Teachers Association at Denali Elementary school asked the Superintendent to be included in the process.

After weeks of contentious discussion between the parents, school board, and Fairbanks Principals Association the board did find that a committee would not be a detriment in the process, allowing parents to participate.

However, the board did not vote to approve the proposed memorandum written by Superintendent Pete Lewis, suggesting the process and board be used in further hirings until the Fairbanks Principals Association contract expires in 2016.
