Richardson Highway near Valdez to reopen tomorrow afternoon

Officials with the Alaska Department of Transportation Northern Region say the Richardson Highway in Valdez will be reopening tomorrow afternoon.

The highway between Miles 12 to 18 in the Keystone Canyon has been closed for over a week after a series of avalanches left them buried feet deep in snow.

Crews have been working on clearing the roads and testing for safety and stability of the ground underneath the roads since early Friday morning.

According to DOT Spokeswoman Hannah Blankenship, no damage was found on the roadways under the nearly 10 thousand cubic yards of snow that fell damming the river and creating a lake across the highway.
