Residents encouraged to stay off ski trails at Birch Hill today

The Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) Parks and Recreation program, in cooperation with the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks, are advising the public that the gate at the Birch Hill Recreation area is locked.

The action was taken due to the current weather conditions. There are reports of varying amounts of light rain and freezing drizzle throughout the borough.

Officials are asking that cross country skiers not ski at Birch Hill Recreation Area until the temperatures drop below freezing, the rain stops, and the conditions improve.

By closing the gates and remaining off the ski trails Borough officials say it will give the ski trails the best chance to stay intact until the temperature drops and more snow begins to fall.

The gated access road will remain closed until conditions improve. Borough officials will be monitoring the situation throughout the day and will make a decision later this (Monday) afternoon for the school based ski programs that are scheduled to take place at Birch Hill.
