A report states budget cuts could affect Alaska's two major bases

A recent report has stated that due to budget cuts Alaska's two major bases could be affected.

The posts could stand to lose thousands of soldiers however; some Army Posts could also gain as many as 1 thousand people.

The posts that will be affected by this shift in numbers have not been chosen yet but if Fairbanks' Fort Wainwright was chosen to lose its brigade combat team; it would reduce the base population by about 4,900 people.

Last week the Under Secretary of the U.S. Army spoke about the assessment and its shrinking of the Army forces. Dr. Joseph Westphal stated, "It is going to be harder all the way around because we have to ramp down to a force of about 490 thousand on the active side by 2017."
