FAIRBANKS-Last night at Boileau Hall the Monroe Rams volleyball team hosted another 4A non-conference match up. This one was against Lathrop.
The Rams started strong taking the opening set 25-13 but the second and third were harder. Lathrop showed their mettle making it a 8-6 game. After a Monroe timeout the Rams respond with a 10-2 run and take the second set 25-15.
In the third the Malemutes pushed the rams staying within two or one point for almost the entire set. Song Ebbesen had 16 assists and Karli Fitzgerald had 10 digs to lead Lahtrop.
But whenever the Rams needed a point or play Andi Clark sparked it with her 25 assists. Marissa King had 13 kills and Emily Pfister had a game high 14 kills as Monroe wins the final set 25-20 and sweeps Lathrop (1-2). The Rams are now 5-0 to start the season.
Monroe head coach Dave Obermeyer said this game was good test of focus for Monroe.
"Lathrop is really scrappy and we knew that. So we [have] to be on our toes and right now they made us do things that made us uncomfortable which is what we need to make our focus better. We got to improve every game. If we don't we're going to get caught," Obermeyer said.
One of the key parts in the Monroe system is King. The junior outside hitter credits the team's success to the newcomers and the setters.
"We lost a lot of seniors last year and a lot of people thought that like we weren't going to come back but we gained new people. The upcoming people like the freshmen [and] sophomores are really helping us out. Our setters are really stepping it up and so our setters are definitely the key to our game," King said.
