FAIRBANKS, AK-The Lathrop Malemutes had another nonconference game and had the option of treating it like just any other game or use it to get back on track. The Malemutes finished sixth in their first holiday tournament in Phoenix at the Cactus Jam and lost a winnable game against the hot Monroe Rams in the Mt. McKinley Bank Holiday Classic. Lathrop took this game serious and got back on track at Joe T Court against the Hutchison Hawks.
The Malemutes neutralized Darren Silas and the Hawks forcing turnover after turnover and at one point it looked like a layup line in the second half.
At halftime Lathrop led 37-24 and broke out the third on a 10-2 run and cruise 79-46 over Hutchison.
Tremon Washington had a game high 19 points for Lathrop leading four other Malemutes in double figures including Kyle Carlson with 14. Everett Green and Alex Jordan contributed 10 points a piece.
Darren Silas had 16 for the Hawks and Michael Benson had 14.
Lathrop is now 5-3 and head coach Milo Griffin says his team is getting used to moving naturally without always having to get into an offensive set which keeps opponents off balance sometimes.
On the girls' side the Lady Malemutes followed suit to get the sweep against the Hutchison Hawks.
It was a back and forth start to the game nice way play after tip off. Both teams were notted up at four all early in the first quarter. The Hawks were down just five, 15-10 going into the second quarter but the Malemutes, like the boys team, converted turnovers into points.
Ruthie Hebard dropped a game high 16 points nine of her points came in the second half. Jasmine White added 15 a dynamic duo forming there for the Malemutes.
Ashley Stark led the Hawks with 12 as the utchison's Mimi Wood was a non factor. Elly Veazley had eight in the first quarter for the Hawks.
The Malemutes are on a roll coming off a Clark Cochrane Chrismas Classic title in Ketchikan and get their fourth win in a row 47-35 over Hutchison.
