Pickleball arrives in Fairbanks

The Fairbanks North Star Borough Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce the addition of two Pickleball courts at the Big Dipper. Michael Bork, Parks and Recreation Director stated: “The community has asked for these courts and we are happy to be able to be responsive to the communities' request. I anticipate they will be fully operational by Monday, June 10.”

The two Pickleball courts offered at the Big Dipper will be available on a first-come basis to start. The Borough will have the necessary equipment to play this game, which includes paddles and balls. They will be available for checkout from the Big Dipper skate room, and will be free of charge.

If you are not familiar with the game, Pickleball is played on a court that is similar to a tennis court layout. The size of the court and net are smaller, though, and Pickleball has a different set of rules. The game is played with a small plastic ball and paddles. Pickleball is easy for beginner’s to learn, but it can also develop into a quick fast-paced, competitive game for more experienced players.

Bork added, “The wonderful thing about Pickleball is it’s a game where people of all ages can enjoy. It’s a great way for a whole family to have fun and stay in shape, and we hope the community enjoys it!"
Parks and Recreation will be hosting a free clinic with the Fairbanks Pickleball Club on Saturday, June 15 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM at the Big Dipper Ice Arena outdoor rinks. This will be a great opportunity to learn how to play this fun, active game.
