FAIRBANKS- The day Alaskans highly anticipate has arrived with the distribution of dividend checks from the state's oil savings account. State officials say nearly 593,000 Alaskans will receive the $900 dividend this year. Eighty-five percent chose the direct deposit option and will see money deposited today. Another 86,000 checks will be mailed to people wanting paper checks. Officials with the PFD office say paper checks will realistically arrive in Fairbanks by Monday or Tuesday.
The amount of the dividends is based on a five–year average of the Alaska permanent fund's investment earnings. This year's average includes 2009, a recession year when the fund posted a $2.5 billion net loss in statutory net income. Last year's dividend was $878 per person (the lowest since 2005).
