Petition for a Later High school Start Time

FAIRBANKS- Current research shows high school students perform better when their first class is later in the morning. The U.S. Secretary of Education said he agrees with the conclusions, but the final decision about when to start high school should be decided by local school districts. In Alaska, the President of the Alaska Sleep Clinic, Kevin Asp, is circulating a petition to change high school start times.

He says adolescents have a different sleep schedule than children and adults because hormones keep them up later.  “If our real focus is on education, we should make sure our kids are at their prime attention and focus abilities as far as getting good sleep,” Asp says.  He added it’s a disservice to our children if we let them go to school impared.
