Patriots and Malemuts start softball season off with wins

FAIRBANKS, AK-In high school sports two softball teams got off to good starts to their seasons over the weekend down in Palmer. The Lathrop Malemutes went perfect 5-0 to start their season. The last two wins were shutouts. An 11-0 win over Wasilla and a 12-0 decision over Skyview.

Kacey Duffield pitched a no no, with 10 strikeouts against and a grand slam against Wasilla then sister Kimi followed up with a one hitter, two singles and an RBI against Skyview for Lathrop.

The North Pole Patriots finished 2-1 over the weekend. The Patriots also beat Wasilla on Friday 12-7. Ashlyn Mulcare went three for three with a rbi in that one. In Saturday morning's game injuries to three players contributed to the 12-4 loss to Colony. The Patriots bounced back against Palmer later that day with a 19 to 8 win.

Four players had three hits in the victory and pitcher Robyn Heineken struck out five and walked one in the win for North Pole.

With spring sports cancelled again this week due to the winter weather that is still here in late April who knows when these squads and other interior teams will have home games.
