FAIRBANKS- Hundreds of teachers and administrators met during the Fairbanks school district’s opening session today at Hering Auditorium. It’s a welcome-back event where school officials talk about the upcoming year and receive specialized training. The Superintendent of schools, Karen Gaborik says it’s uncommon for the district’s teachers to be in one place, and that the event helps educators feel unified. The incoming president of the National Education Association, Lily Eskelsen Garcia, was the keynote speaker. She encouraged teachers to share their success stories with friends and family to counter negative news about public education. "Most of the time it’s not news to say, wow kids loved coming to school... so you have to make your own news," Eskelsen Garcia says.
