One person has died in the fire that had heavily damaged a large retail store and apartment complex located at 3550 Geraghty St. Investigators have been working to account for all the occupants of the building. Late Wednesday evening while investigators were going through the fire debris looking for where the fire originated and the possible cause, Investigators uncovered the victim. Investigators believe the person was in one of the apartments on the second floor. Identity of the victim is unknown. The body will be sent to the Medical Examiners’ Office in Anchorage for positive identification and cause of death. The investigation is continuing.
The fire damaged the building to a point where the building collapsed. Heavy equipment has been brought in to assist investigators with the removal of fire debris. This is a very time consuming process. Every bit of debris has to be examined to help piece the investigation together.
