Olympians Vanderkaay and Joyce visit Hamme Pool for clinics

FAIRBANKS, AK-Two accomplished three time Olympians Peter Vanderkaay and Kara Lynn Joyce were at the Hamme Pool today as the Fitter and Faster Swim Tour made a stop in Fairbanks.

Clinic participants were able to take pictures with the Olympians and try on their medals. The two day clinic that runs through tomorrow gives kids a chance to get swimming tips from two of the best.

Vanderkaay has two gold medals along with two bronze medals and Joyce has four silvers. They say it's all about inspiring the next generation of swimmers.

"Peter and I really just try to help the kids out with their swimming; teach them techniques, teach them drills, motivate them and hopefully inspire them," Joyce said.

"We're gonna give them a lot of information today, but we want them to walk away inspired, motivated, and happy they're in the sport of swimming and hopefully pick up a few tips that will make them faster too," Vanderkaay said. "It's a lot of fun, we get to travel, we get to meet a lot of people and inspire a lot of kids and it's just very rewarding to give back on the grass roots level."

One of the clinic participants is Alex Suleimani who is an aspiring 13 year-old swimmer. He loves thr 50 and 100 free and of course meeting his Vanderkaay. His Olympic hero.

He's my favorite Olympian, I always wanted to meet him and now I'm here taking a picture with him. I actually get a chance to work with real Olympians and work on my stroke and dry land and everything," Suleimani said.
