FAIRBANKS- Mental health care in the interior is finding success at the Northern Door Club House. The clubhouse puts a spin on mental health services because it does not provide official treatment. Each day about 20 people show up to socialize, share a meal, and relax, rather than worry about counseling sessions. Currently, the clubhouse is funded with a small grant and managed by volunteers. Gene Redden, a retired health- care professional, has led the effort, but he says the members are the real leaders. The future of the clubhouse is not certain after May, but Redden says he is optimistic it will remain open. Anyone is welcome at the clubhouse which is open weekdays from noon to 4 pm and is located at the Fairbanks Community Mental Health Services building on South Cushman.
