FAIRBANKS, AK-It was championship Saturday at the Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association fields for the 2013 Kohl's Cup Tournament. A team with bright yellow highlighter jerseys was made up of North Pole soccer players. They faced a hodgepodge of players from Lathrop, UAF and West Valley.
North Pole's Alicia Lens, who plays goalie and forward got a goal from 10 yards away that went right inbetween the goalies legs. The score was 4-0 at that point in the second half. They were up 3-0 at halftime. North Pole would go on to win 5-2.
Savannah Moisan, a rising junior at North Pole, had two goals and an assist to leader the champion squad.
The North Pole boys and Greyhounds came down to penalty kicks. It was tied 3 all at the end of the overtime periods. It was 2-1 for the longest until the Greyhounds forced overtime in the last 10 minutes of regulation.
North Pole played the entirety of this game down one or two men.
The penalty kicks were even tied until last kick. The Greyhound's goalie, who played in goal all game, misses his PK as the ball went wide and bounced off the right post giving the title to North Pole. Evan Strong, a Lathrop senior and Pacific University commit, joined the team for the first time this summer and had two goals to lead the North Pole team in scoring.
The Patriots sweep the Kohl's Cup and it's the first Cup for both teams.
Strong described what was going through his mind watching the last penalty kick.
“I thought he was going to make it and he obviously just wasn’t warm enough," Strong said. He also went on to talk about being a rookie for this summer team.
"It’s awesome that these guys have been a team forever and I just joined this year and they haven’t won one yet. It’s just awesome to be a part of it,” Strong said.
Moisan believes the North Pole soccer program is making strides as a program that's on the rise.
“This is really awesome. We’ve come a long way as a team like both of the boys teams and the girls teams," Moisan said. "So it’s really awesome that we’re all just a big family so it’s really cool for both of us to share this win.”
