FAIRBANKS, AK -- It takes a special boss, manager or supervisor to realize employees benefit from a workplace that supports their family responsibilities. There are dozens of work places in our community that have been recognized for their efforts in promoting good work ethics and family support. They are past recipients of the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s Early Childhood Development Commission (ECDC) Family Friendly Workplace Award.
And now you can nominate a business for their family friendly work place practices. If you would like to nominate your employer, all you’ll need to do is log on to the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s (FNSB) website at http://www.fnsb.us and follow the Family Friendly Workplace Awards link. If you prefer, you can also call 459-1287 and request a nomination form.
The EDCC has been recognizing employers and handing out the awards for 11 years. Since the program’s inception 352 businesses have been nominated, while 66 have received the Family Friendly Workplace Award.
FNSB Mayor Luke Hopkins wholly supports the program. He said, "Employers in Fairbanks have shown how they support their employees when emergency situations come up, or when other events take place during the typical work day. I applaud those businesses who allow parents to be parents when necessary. It creates a happier work force, which in turn shows up in productivity."
ECDC Chair Paige Vonder Haar agrees. She says, "This is so good for our community. Not only are employees happy, but this is good for business too. We’ve found that employers have seen improved productivity, increased loyalty and morale and a decrease in absenteeism and turnover.” She added, “Being a family friendly work place is also a great tool for attracting new talent to an organization."
When you see the Family Friendly Work Place award in a business you know the company strives to create a better work-life environment.
The nomination period is open from March 18 through 29. An awards ceremony will be held at the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce luncheon on April 16, 2013. Mayor Hopkins will present plaques to the winning businesses. All nominees will receive a certificate and a decal that can be placed on their office door or window to show everyone the business believes in a family friendly work place.
The ECDC seeks to educate and advocate on issues relating to early childhood development and school readiness. The Family Friendly Workplace Awards is funded by the generous donations of many past nominees and winners. No Borough funds are used on this program.
