NEWS UPDATE: Troopers release name of drowning victim.

Late Wednesday, Alaska State Troopers released the name of the man who drowned in a South Fairbanks gravel pond on Sunday.

Troopers, and the Fairbanks Fire Department responded to the South Lathrop area around 3pm.

They say the man, identified as 42 year old Handy McKaney, had been pulling his children in a raft, when he apparently stepped off the edge of the gravel bottom, and went under the


Firefighers searched the pond for about an hour before locating McKaney's body around :15pm.

He was pronounced dead a short time later at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

Family members say McKaney was unable to swim, and was not wearin a personal flotation device when he went into the water.
