NEWS UPDATE: Search called off for Chena Lakes drowning victim.

As darkness fell, authorities called off the search for a 33 year old Fort Wainwright Army soldier, who apparently drowned Sunday evening at Chena Lakes.

News Center 11 was on-scene just before midnight as a dive team from Fort Wainwright suspended the search for the still unidentified man, who is said to have went under the water

around 7pm.

Divers say they'll resume their search around 8am Monday morning.

Alaska State Trooper spokesman Tim Despain says the man had been swimming about 100 yards off shore when he began having difficulty and started calling for help.

Despain says the man went under the water before help could arrive.

The name of the man remains unknown at this time, but witnesses as the scene confirmed he is an active-duty soldier.

Firefighter's dragged the lake bed, as the victim's wife, children, and fellow soldiers kept vigil on shore.

"We're now treating this as a recovery mission," said Despain.

This is a still developing story.

News Center 11 will have more as information becomes available.
