After receiving advice from lawyers a proposed change has been made in the hiring process of a new principal at Denali Elementary School.
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District received the awaited legal advice and has decided to require Superintendent Pete Lewis to form a parent/staff committee in the hiring of a new principal at the school.
According to a memorandum agreement between the Superintendent, School Board, and the Fairbanks Principals Association the newly formed committee would allow the Superintendent to serve on board, along with 3 parents, a Fairbanks Native Association Member, 2 non-building administrators, and the building staff selected.
The memorandum suggests the committee be implemented for all principal selection processes until the FPA contract expires in 2016.
This decision comes after members of the Denali Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Association voiced their concerns in forming a group to help aid in the selection of a principal.
That request led to a response by the Fairbanks Principals Association on possible legal action.
Last week the FNSBSD Board asked to wait on a final decision until they could consult with their legal advisors.
The memorandum written by Superintendent Pete Lewis on March 7th listed the proposed changes to the processes granting the committee permission to be formed.
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District School Board will be meeting next Tuesday, March 11th.
