Navy Considers Expanding Arctic Operations

FAIRBANKS- The U.S. Military is researching methods to move more Navy resources into the Arctic. Right now, there are no cost estimates, but the Navy is creating a strategy to improve communications, upgrade ships, and negotiate international agreements to monitor sea traffic in the region. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said issues in the Arctic will become more important as melting ice opens new sea lanes. Maritime traffic in the Bering Strait increased 50% in the last eight years and some estimate summers could be ice-free as early as 2020.
