FAIRBANKS-The Nanook hockey team climbed out of their mid-season hole and have clinched a spot in the WCHA playoffs. They did by way of a sweep this weekend at the Carlson over the no.4 team in the nation the Ferris State Bulldogs.
After winning 4-1 on Friday the Nanooks were in a tight one tied 2-2 after two but the Nanooks went off for three goals in the third period to pull out a 5-3 win.
Cody Kunyk scored the equalizer in the first and had two helpers to lead UAF. Colton Beck added a goal and an assist and Marcus Basara chipped with two helpers.
Beck, Brandon Morely and Garrick Perry scored in the 3rd to put the game away. Sean Cahill has won six in a row as UAF's netminder with 21 saves on 24 shots on Saturday. Cahill is now 8-3-1 on the year.
UAF is hot winning eight of their last nine and have six straight. This big sweep over a top five team isn't new to the Nanooks. The Nanooks upset no.4/5 Notre Dame last January in South Bend.
Now they'll have to duplicate or even raise their performance because this weekend is the Gov Cup at the Carlson Center. The season series with UAA is tied 1-1.
