Nanooks stumble in three consecutive wins

FAIRBANKS-The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team was looking for their third consecutive sweep on Saturday night. The Falcons of Seattle Pacific had a sweep in mind as well winning this one 25-16, 25-22, 25-14 over the Nanooks.

The Flacons sunk their talons in this game hitting over 45 percent and only four errors. Madi Cavell had 10 kills with no errors for SPU. Eillie Brit had 15 kills and hit 50 percent.

"Honestly I'm just trying to keep it in front of me and put some power on the ball which I felt like it went pretty well tonight. But I still have stuff I need to work on as far as keeping the ball out in from of me so yeah it's pretty fun I like it," Cavell said.

The Nanooks made a charge in the second set going on a 7-1 to make 23-21 before the Falcons stalled the run.

UAF was led by Sam Harthun's second double of the year with 13 kills and 11 digs. Keri Knight added 10 kills as well.

Alaska is now 2-11 and 1-1 in the GNAC. Harthun was named the Red Lion Co-Offensive Player of the Week by the GNAC. She led all conference members with 31 kills. UAA's Julia Mackey was the other player of the week. They both shared rookie of the year last season.

As far as Saturday's game the Nanooks will need to work on their blocking.

"We were kind of clueless as to why there were hammering us on the left side," UAF head coach Mallory Larranaga said. "Our defense up front makes such a huge improvement when we know we have to play behind them you know any movement they make in the front row of the defense has to change what they're doing and I really feel like we failed in our defense in the block."
