FAIRBANKS, Ak-On Saturday the women's basketball team of UAF recognized their seniors before the final game of the season. The seniors included Taylor Altenburg, Marissa Atoruk, and Jacqueline Lovato.
The women were hosting rival UAA who came in on a six game winning streak. In the first half the Seawolves proved their mettle going up as much as nine and led 37-30 at the break.
But the Nanooks fought back led by Altenburg who scored 13 and gave the Nanooks their first lead of the game, 48-47 with 12:26 to play. Brianna Kirk, the freshman, had 13 and ten boards for the Nooks.
The Seawolves though answered with a 19-6 run over the next five minutes and would finish with 76-61 win led by Kylie Burns game high 21 points and the timely shooting of Alysa Horn.
It was bitter sweet for the seniors the women's basketball team could have success in the short future.
Senior Taylor Altenburg said, "You know, even though we did it when it was a great feeling to go out and play in this environment one last time."
"The next generation of Nanooks are really going to impress people. I think that they really need to make a name for themselves now that we have established kind of the foundation. The type of kids that we want and clearly the kids that never give up. It's only going to get better," women's head coach Cody Burgess-Bench said.
