MIDWAY, UT-After the first day of U.S. Nationals yesterday the Nanooks saw two skiers on the men's team place in the top 40 and a rookie lead the women with a top 20 finish.
Logan Hanneman and Jonas Loffler, both juniors, finished 24th and 36 respectively in the 15K classic race. Hanneman finished in 41:17.4 which was the second fastest for a NCAA Central Region skier. Loffler, who was the second Nanook to cross the finish line, came in at 42:15 which was fourth best for the NCAA Central Region.
198 racers were on the trails and UAF's Kenneth Brewer came in third for the Nanook sin 44:02.9.
On the women's side Nanook freshman Nicole Bathe led UAF in the 10K classic finishing 19th overall in 32:01.2. Her time was the seventh best among collegiate skiers and tops out of the NCAA Central Region. Bath was also the second youngest to complete the race out of a field of 143.
Both teams will back on the trails for the 1.5K sprints.
