Monroe Rams make punch ticket to first ever state title game

FAIRBANKS-Today, with just 13 players, the Monroe Rams made history with their 40-0 victory over Barrow. The Rams hosted their first playoff game in the small schools state semifinal taking on the Barrow Whalers. The last time these teams met the Rams won 51-8 on homecoming where all five senior scored touchdowns. That would trend would continue in this game.

On Monroe's first possession, on third and 16 senior quarterback Tyler Wells goes to senior running back Alex Callahan for a 54 yard score with 7:15 to go in the first quarter. Callahan had nice day finishing with two touchdowns and two 32 yard field goals.

Wells plays basketball as well knows about buzzer beaters. Just as the first quarter buzzer sounded he scrambles from Whaler defenders and jets to the pylon for a 28 yard touchdown giving Monroe a 14-0 lead.

After a defensive stop senior running back Dylan Gavora took a hand off and went through a huge hole on the right side of his offensive line and would not be denied juking and shedding tacklers for a 33 yard touchdown run. The Rams led 21-0 at the 5:51 mark of the second quarter.

Then the play of the game occurred for the Rams towards the end of the first half. The Barrow Whalers were drivin, putting together a nice drive with a balanced attack. Barrow was at teh Ram 10 yard line and quarterback Jesse Sanchez dropped back to pass but Monroe defensive Connor O'Kelly-Ault hits Sanchez forcing something that look like a fumble and interception. A fumbleception. The loose ball fell into the hands of the Rams' Grant Olson and he goes 90 yards for the touchdown.

Monrore led 27-0 at the half and milked the clock and made the stops in the second half. The Rams shutout the Whalers 40-0. Monroe wins its first playoff game and goes to small schools state championship for the first time in program history. The state title game is October 19th and they will face the Nikiski Bulldogs. The Rams beat Nikiski in the regular season finale 37-27.
